Why Are My Teeth Wearing Down and What Can I Do About It?

Why are my teeth wearing down?

Tooth wear is something I see quite often in practice. Many people do not notice it happening until their teeth start to look shorter or feel sensitive.

There are several possible reasons why this might happen, and in most cases it develops gradually over time.

Common causes of tooth wear

1. Grinding or clenching

You might grind or clench your teeth during sleep or when concentrating. Over time, this can cause enamel to wear away and edges to flatten.

2. Acid erosion

Acidic drinks, citrus fruits and reflux can soften the enamel. When enamel becomes weaker, it may wear faster when brushing or eating.

3. Tooth brushing

Brushing too firmly or using a hard-bristled brush can slowly wear the enamel near the gum line.

4. Tooth position and bite

If your bite is uneven or certain teeth meet too heavily, they may wear more quickly than others.

5. Age and general factors

As we age, it is natural for some wear to occur. Habits such as nail biting or chewing pens can also make it worse.

What can be done about it?

The first step is to understand the cause. Once that is known, there are several ways the wear can be managed.

  • Protective night guards may help if grinding is a factor.
  • Composite bonding can rebuild worn edges and restore shape.
  • Porcelain veneers may help protect teeth and improve appearance if there is more significant wear.
  • Tooth straightening can correct bites that put uneven pressure on certain teeth.
  • Diet and brushing advice can help reduce ongoing erosion or abrasion.

Every mouth is different, so treatment is tailored to your situation. Sometimes a small change in habits is enough to prevent further damage.

Why it matters

Worn teeth can lead to sensitivity, shorter appearance and, in some cases, bite changes. Early management can help protect the remaining enamel and prevent further wear.
