Brown Spots on Teeth – What They Are and What You Can Do

Brown spots can show up on teeth. They may look worrying. But they often are harmless. In this post I explain what brown spots are, what might cause them and when you might see a dentist.

What are brown spots?
Brown spots are areas of discolouration on the tooth surface. They might be light or dark. They can be new or have been there for some time.

What might cause brown spots?

  • Incomplete enamel formation: sometimes called enamel hypomineralisation or hypoplasia. This happens when the enamel does not form fully or evenly during tooth development. It may be linked to childhood illness, high fever or nutritional problems. Affected areas may look brown or creamy and can wear down more easily.
  • Staining from food or drink such as tea, coffee or red wine.
  • Tobacco use, which can leave brown marks.
  • Fluorosis: too much fluoride when teeth were forming may leave mottled brown areas.
  • Decay: early tooth decay can look brown. It may feel rough or sticky.
  • Trauma or injury to a tooth can cause internal discolouration in time.

These causes may overlap. Some spots may be purely cosmetic; others may need treatment.

When you might want to see a dentist
If a brown spot feels rough, or if it gets larger or starts hurting, it may need attention. A dentist can check if it is stain or decay. Treatment may help stop decay and improve how your tooth looks.

Helpful treatments

  • Professional cleaning might remove surface stains.
  • Whitening may help if the spot is a stain on the surface.
  • Resin infiltration or minor filling may be needed if early decay is present.
  • More advanced care may be suggested if needed.
