Understanding when a dental procedure may be needed
It’s not always easy to know whether a dental procedure is necessary. Many patients ask, “Do I really need that treatment?” It’s a fair question, and one Matt Dash Dentist takes very seriously in Edinburgh’s West End.
We believe it’s important that you feel confident about any decision relating to your dental health. That’s why we focus on clear communication, transparency and giving you the tools to understand your own mouth.

How we help you see what we see
One of the ways we help you make informed choices is through detailed images and scans. During your appointment, we take high quality photographs of your teeth and use an intra-oral scanner. This creates a 3D image of your mouth, so you can see exactly what we see.
This can help make things clearer. For example, you might be able to spot a crack in a tooth or see the early signs of gum disease. These tools don’t replace clinical judgment, but they can help you understand the reasons behind a recommended dental procedure.
When is treatment necessary?
Some dental issues may not cause pain or visible problems right away. But that doesn’t always mean they can be left alone. For example, early tooth decay or gum inflammation might not hurt now, but could worsen over time. A small filling today might prevent a root treatment later on.
We try to take a balanced approach. If something can be safely monitored instead of treated, we’ll tell you. If a procedure is urgent, we’ll explain why. We always aim to involve you in decisions rather than pressure you.
Questions you might want to ask
If you’re unsure about a dental procedure, it’s fine to ask questions like:
- What will happen if I delay or avoid this?
- Are there other options?
- Can this be monitored instead?
At Matt Dash Dentist, we’re happy to talk through the pros and cons of any treatment. Our goal is to help you make decisions that feel right for you.
Why trust matters
We understand that trust is built over time. That’s why we take care to explain our thinking, show you evidence and involve you every step of the way. You’ll never be pushed into treatment you don’t understand.
We also offer a complimentary e-consultation with award-winning dentist Matt Dash. This can be a helpful first step if you have concerns or questions about a possible dental procedure.
